The 21st September 2024 saw the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Holst. Gustav was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire at No. 4 Pittville Terrace, now No. 4 Clarence Road. This is now a museum to Gustav's memory known as the 'Victorian House'.
To mark this anniversary a special commemorative service took place at St Botolph's Church, Bishopsgate in the City of London on Wednesday 18th September at 1.10pm. The service consisted of two voluntaries for organ which Gustav composed between 1890 and 1891. One was played at the beginning of the service and the other was played at the very end. We also had two hymns by Gustav as well as two sections from the mass by Imogen Holst, Gustav's only daughter.
Before the service a quarter peal of Plain Bob Triples was rung by members of the Wednesday Lunchtime band.
