In memoriam — Rev. Henry Thomas Ellacombe (1790 - 1885)

Reverend Ellacombe was a practical individual and studied engineering under Marc Brunel [Isambard K Brunel’s father] before becoming ordained.

In 1821 whilst curate at St Mary’s Bitton, near Bristol he invented the chiming apparatus which bears his name in order to circumvent the local ringers who were often drunk and unruly.

Bitton Parish History Group and St Mary’s Church jointly organised worldwide Ellacombe Chimes Bicentennial celebrations on 26th June 2021.

Rev Ellacombe was a leading exponent of Belfry Reform through his invention, pamphlets and editorship of the Bells and Bell Ringing section of the weekly periodical “Church Bells”.

From 1850 he was Rector of Clyst St George in Devon. He was one of the leading figures in the formation of the Devonshire Guild of Ringers, the first county association.
